cant drive with door open?????
So I'm having my car washed today and I see the guy who is washing my car struggling to move the car. He keeps rolling back (my car is a DCT), so I go over to help and my idrive keeps saying must close door and puts the car back into neutral . Is this new??? I don't recall my last m3 to require the doors to be fully shut before going into gear.

Of course, it makes sense (for the most part) is it's a safety issue and BMW is all about being safe. Can't blame them for that.

No kidding, that would be a big time hassle for me... A few places I go, I must pull in at a SHARP angle to keep my car from scraping. When I back out, I must back out at a sharp angle as well, I often open the driver's door to make sure I'm not going to hit the curb.

It is not a true "Automatic" Come to complete stop and let off the brake, the car will roll backwards if you are on a slope... even if it is in gear.

Clarification
So wait... I don't understand...
Does the car... 1. When already in 1st gear... if you open the door, the car refuses to move asking you to close the door before engaging the clutch... this would be annoying... or 2. The car refuses to select 1st gear (from N) when the door is open... this makes sense... |

You can go forward or reverse with the door open IF your seat belt is buckled.
If seat belt is not buckled, when you select 1st gear or reverse, it will briefly indicate it is in gear but will then go back to N if the door is open. Just buckle up and you're good to go. |

Yep. You can't leave an automatic in-gear and unattended, it will roll away (unless the particular model has this feature). You also can't leave a manual in-gear and unattended, 6MT guys, so smug ;-) With DCT, you could potentially walk away, leaving the car in a dangerous state, if it didn't have this 'feature'.

It is definitely not the same as an auto car because you CAN have your door open with no belt on and put your car into drive and inch up or reverse for parking, but with the M DCT it just throws the car right back in neutral. Its not a big deal just strange to me because i wasn't aware of it until now. I just thought i was haven't another malfunction issue at first because my 2008 m3 gave me so many transmission problems that i ended up taking it back to the dealer but in this case its just a safety issue.
