I drove them both. Completely different price tags. So if you can afford the 911 Carrera S vert go for it.

Price is not an option, although I think the targa is priced wrong. The only advantage I see to the targa is it gives me the classic look of the 911 with a little more open air than the coupe. The vert is nice but not too sure I like the look of the vert.

I took the M3 over a 997.2 "S" and my deal was for $21k off MSRP - still took the M, no question.
Porsche is a Porsche, but there are too many impracticalities that come with it, including the fact that every mid-life crisis old, balding man is driving one in Los Angeles.

I would go with the Porsche if money is not a problem and you don't need the additional room of the M3.
...You could get the M3 now though and save the Porsche for when you are old and gray

I don't honestly know why people say the 911/911S drives better than the M3. Unless it's for ego reasons, the M3 is a better driver. The only model it might qualify as a better driver is the GT3, but haven't driven that one. The model that definitely drives better than the M3 is the CS, but it's not a pretty car from the rear, and happens to cost less than the 911; that's the best driver's car for the money IMO, but has many drawbacks. The 911 seems to be the 'progression', but it's not a better driver IMO. It's going to be hard to top the M3 as a driver (especially in manual, and without electronic nannies), but there're a ton more cars with better 'name recognition' than the M3, and that's what I suspect the majority of affluent buyers are after.

c2s cab. faster. no speed limiter. lighter. proper brakes. no lag in the gas pedal. better steering response. doesn't twist around itself like m3 cab feels. way better fuel economy. better shifter feel. these are the things you are paying for. for same money though you can get a CPO 997.1 GT3 which would trump any C2S. open top is nice, but too much of a compromise for a vehicle designed with a closed roof in the first place.
YMMV.

Doesn't the 911 still use a soft top? If so, you have to consider that the M3 vert has a significant reduction in performance versus the standard M3 coupe. The hardtop adds like 300-400 pounds to the car. I don't believe this is the case with the 911. So if you are committed to a convertible and still want performance, go for the 911.

I ordered an M3 a year ago. Cancelled the order after 2 months of waiting and got a barely used 997S (1,800 miles). Drove that for 9 months and then just got a new M3. They're such different cars. The 911 is certainly more rewarding to drive at the limit, and the steering feel is amazing. Primary reason I traded it in was space - you can only fit one adult in the rear seat, and even then it's uncomfortable for both of your passengers. The M3 is far more practical.
There are several things about the M that I appreciate a lot more now having owned the 911. It rides much smoother and allows the driver to be more relaxed in regular driving. The shorter wheelbase of the 911 and light front end (the latter on the rear drive 911s only) contribute to a very nervous driving feel, which, once you get a lot of experience behind the 911, is amazing. It doesn't inspire too much confidence in drivers inexperienced with 911s and is the reason most people would be faster in an M3 on a track. However, it is something you will grow to love about the 911. Overall, I don't regret trading in the 911 for the M. Both amazing cars, but the versatility of the M impresses me a bit more. I will certainly get another 911 in the not-so-distant future (likely a GT3), but since I can only keep one car at the moment, I'm happy with the M. Hope this helps. Choose wisely. |
