Question about drivers who chose DCT
*******DON'T WORRY, THIS IS NOT ANOTHER THREAD ASKING FOR ADVICE ON CHOOSING DCT OR 6MT!!!*******
I've read a lot of the threads with people giving their opinion on both, and have already made up my mind on which I prefer, but despite all the in depth comparisons and flame wars there's one question that I'm curious to know the answer to: Of those who chose DCT, how many never owned a manual transmission car before? |

Can we answer if we fit the other category as well?
Always had manuals but went with DCT for the M3. Still loving it but i do get the occasional itch to row through gears.

Pretty much all my other fun cars have been MTs, as the other said I there are some days when I wish I had the 6. Overall I'm happy with my decision and would do it again

My guess, you will find very few never-owned-a-manual in this response. DCT is a relatively new innovation in affordable street cars. The M3 is not the first performance car for many buyers, since it is beyond an entry-level cost for most folks. And since most peformance cars have been manuals, that will be the general experience. This is my first DCT following many MT cars. It ain't perfect, but it is a very good transmission. My last performance car was a 996 GT3. The porsche clutch and shifter are so good, I would stay with a manual in that car. But compared to the BMW alternative, I find DCT the better option. And yes, I miss the heel/toe shifting experience occasionally.

I've owned seven manuals, and never an auto.
Glad I chose DCT for this car, thought if it was my only car, I'd choose manual.

Driven manuals my whole driving lifetime and chose DCT now, I'd make the same decision if I had to do it again.

Always had manuals until I bought a 2008 Audi TT 3.2 Quattro with their version of a dual clutch transmission (DSG). I used the car for 3 years as a track car and was totally sold on the transmission. One of the key features of the M3 as a replacement track car was the DCT and I have not been disappointed after a dozen track days. I find that even the instructors who give me a hard time about driving a manual like it when they drive it.

I've owned in excess of 20 cars, 18 where three-pedal manuals, the other two where V-8 powered pick-up trucks. My DCT E90 M3 is my first ever two-pedal "car" and I do have mixed feelings about it. However, I love how brutally efficient the M-DCT is when it comes to straight line acceleration.

First car at age 16 was an auto. I had it for 9 months. Every car since (23 years) have only been manuals. I'm going DCT for the flawless shifting faster than a human could ever accomplish. I can still shift the gears in S mode or drop it in D when I get stuck in traffic.

Really, why are instructors giving you a hard time about a DCT?

I've had a mix of both; manuals and standard autos. At this point in my life, I'm over rowing gears and could not be happier with the DCT. What a performer it is. I'm done with manuals as long as there are DCT and similar transmissions. Do I miss it sometimes, sure, but I have zero regrets over my DCT. I rarely put it in D.

Yep. Plus, the car as a whole is one of the best production cars to toss around & slide.

I've only driven MT cars prior my M-DCT M3. And this tranny is superior in most ways I think, with this i can rev match every gear from 7th till 1st without even trying hard!

Drove 6mt for 12 years, also drove autos, of course. I think the DCT is more manual than it's given credit for. For example, people getting confused that they cant put it in park when stopped (put it in neutral and pull the e-brake, this isnt an auto). It really is what youd think of as being a manual tranny that just happens to engage/disengage the clutch for you.
