Are the mods worth it to you?
I just wanted to get the forums opinions on if your quasi-legal mods are worth the risk of getting stopped or ticketed to you?
What I am talking about is if you exhaust is louder then your local noise ordinance allows; is the risk of a getting stopped and ticketed worth it to you? If your tint is darker then the legal limit; is the risk of a getting stopped and ticketed worth it to you? If you roll with no front bumper plate, is the risk of a getting stopped and ticketed worth it to you? I ask this because I keep getting shit from everybody because I always have 5% tint on my cars and I never put the front license plate.

They are worth it IMO. The only thing I would do is put on the front plate.
On my previous car I was pulled over 10 times in the 4 years I had it for no front plate. The car was heavily modified so It gave them a reason, and everytime they did thats when they started looking/questioning other things on the car, tint etc. After I mounted it (didnt drill holes into the bumper but found another way to mount it) I wasn't bothered again. |

I am located in NY and have no front plate with 5% tints.....never got pulled over yet (knock on wood)
on my previous 335 with 20% tints it was a weekly routine to get ticketed for them... lol |

Opinions will vary of course, but the concerns you've raised are legitimate. The rules of thumb for me for past and future cars, even when living in two-plate-requiring-Texas some years ago, have been, for exhaust, choose carefully keeping in mind ordinances, zeal factor of local law enforcement; for tint, stay within that which is legal; for bumper, never ever under no circumstances mount a plate on the front bumper regardless of state requirement. No officer has ever raised "front plate" with me in some twenty years of living in 2-plate states, and now that's unlikely to ever be an issue since I'm quite happy to go with a single FL plate which saves on weight and drag.

Front plate, front reflectors, and tint (within reason) are all acceptable risks to me. Front plates, aside from increased identification, are primarily for red light cameras, a supposed cash generator for cities and illegal imo. Front reflectors, to increase your visibility at night, so I'll assume the risk on that. And tint so that your vision is not obstructed in low light, in addition to police being able to see in. I'll assume the risk on the former, as for the latter, that's why I say within reason. If you put yourself in the cop's position, he does have a dangerous job. If he can't see in well, he's not going to be happy. And if he's not happy, you won't be. So.... within reason.
TIP: If you have really dark tint, remember to turn on your interior light if pulled over at night. Might avoid a fix-it for that if he realized you're considerate and don't piss him off with the dark tint.

Forgot to mention exhaust. IMO exhaust sound also needs to be within reason. This is simply a matter of being considerate towards others, especially neighbors. While we might love how the exhaust sounds, it's also important to realize how our actions can affect those around us. Elderly with sensitive hearing/hearing aids, people with sleeping babies, sleeping neighbors, people having conversations they have to stop for someone with a loud exhaust going by, the list can go on. IMO most of the attention you get from a super loud exhaust is "WTF is that" or "Stupid kids," not "Whoa that's a nice car, bet it's fast." And an exhaust this loud is what will attract police attention, which can lead to subsequent tickets for tint, front plate, etc. for your other violations. The cop may also want to "teach you a lesson" if he thinks you're being inconsiderate, so keep that in mind. So an exhaust mod is certainly not a bad mod imo, so as long as it's within reason and you're considerate.

As cars pull in at the local bimmer meet I go to, exhaust on each subsequent cars that pull in are louder & louder. It's almost like a contest. A few sounds like it burns thru 2 gallons of gas just to park. Mine must be just about the only OE M3 out there, except the Huper Optik tint I recently had put on.

Although it looks way better with the blasted plates off, youre totally right. The benefit between the car having no plates is not greater than having plates and cops not really screwing with you so much. Say NO to drilling! Say YES to 3M Industrial Strength Molding Tape! BTW, re: moving the plate to the other side (into the hole w/ the tow hook), most M3's I see at local meets are like that. Some guys even fabricate something so that it's a quick-release (or, was it quick-snap-on?).

The mods are worth the risk to me
I have a few mods that could get me a ticket. Catless exhaust, tinted tail lights, blue angel eyes. I know I am driving on borrowed time but I love my mods

In terms of plain dollar value, I don't think any mods are worth it really, most are even quite overpriced. A couple grand for an axle-back exhaust is terribly expensive IMO. And a $80 for painted reflectors, I guess they cost twice as much to paint then the s54 M3 reflectors.....
But I digress....there are a few mods that I still want to get. |
