Don't knock the DCT...
...till you've at least tried it out significantly that is. I know I'm probably repeating someone (a million monkeys on a million typewriters...), but it is truly remarkable. I have had several manual transmission cars, including a beater '85 318 in h.s. and a Z06 a couple years ago (bye bye when the baby came). They could be fun. At times.
This thing's fun all the time. Switches gears so smoothly. I don't have to worry about changing gears and get to focus instead on driving, listening, feeling the other nuances of the car. I really was so nervous on the test drive, I probably might have gotten a manual if it hadn't been for the wife needing the DCT. But, now I most definitely would have gotten it for just me. I love this car. I wish everyone could have one. I'm glad I'm fortunate enough to own one. Also, if you're thinking about getting the nav, get it. Same for the enhanced sound. I love streaming my bluetooth audio (itunes or pandora) from my iphone and seamlessly answering a call--the contact's name of course being displayed on the screen. So great. So easy. This is a great car. |

Haven't figured out how to play Pandora through the Bluetooth streaming option. What am I doing wrong?

DCT is great, I thoroughly enjoy it, but I'm sure I'd enjoy a traditional manual M3 just as much.
My main gripe with DCT would probably be having to pay attention with what gear you're in. With a regular manual, you always know what gear you're in and what gear you should be in. So in that sense, I think a regular manual is simpler and takes less thinking. DCT is great, but if I didn't have another manual car to drive, I doubt I'd opt for it. I love everything about this car, every time I get in and get on the highway I'm just amazed at the way it accelerates from 65 MPH up! And I'm an old dog and have owned a lot of fast good handling cars.

Loved my DCT for a year and a half now...don't think I could ever go back to a manual.

Happy to feel the DCT love. Mine is on order and will arrive soon, along with the premium sound.

Drove manual stick shift for over 15 years. Couldn't be happier with MDCT, it's incredible and I don't see myself ever going back to a stick shift again.
Love my premium sound also, I loaded up on all the goodies and very happy with all the features. Congrats.

Have always driven manual cars but prior to purchase of the current I did try a DCT M3 and as stated previous it was indeed great. At the end of the day however it may come down to personal preference.

I've always had a manual transmission, and I always said I would...I was wrong. I absolutely love the DCT.
So many people with the manual transmission like to say they are more in control of the car with the manual. I feel the DCT lets the car and driver work together...which in turn makes for a better performance experience IMO. However, it all comes down to personal preferance, and neither one is wrong.

I love my DCT and I also agree that keeping up with which gear are you on now is harder than manual since you lose the tactile/sensory feedback that you have when you move the stick to the next gear in a manual car. So I wonder, would it be better to:
1) Keep the shift paddles the way they are for whoever prefers them. AND 2) Change the DCT stick to have 7 pockets just like the manual instead of just pushing it up and down. This way your hand will give you the same sensory feedback that keeps your brain aware of which gear you are on all the time without the need to read it. What do you guys think?? remember that with this modification you still have the option of driving it on D and you don't need to touch anything.

Looks like the 'old-school' three peddle is going to go away soon. In the very near future all M3s will have DCT. Wish I had the link...but I read this a few days ago from a BMW sponsored article. Anyone else see this?
