Can E9X M3 handle it? Yes, it definitely can.
Went for a spirited drive last night only to find the car was "sore" this morning. There was a clunking noise coming from the rear as I reversed out of my garage, then, as i proceeded forward, my brakes were making a pulsing shooshing sound... "shoosh - shoosh - shoosh" and more rapidly as I sped up. it sounded awful and not what you expect from a $70,000 car.
I recently had the car checked out and everything was "perfect." Beginning to wonder if my previous understanding of M3's tolerance for hard driving has to be readjusted in light of E9X's softness. My E46 M3 took a beating and it never let me down. Anyone have similar experiences?

Noise from brakes are normal. Clunking while backing up... could be normal as well, since it's pretty damn cold last couple days. Keep monitoring but don't stress too much now.

You misinterpret. She's trying to tell that you didn't drive her hard enough last night. Ride her hard and put her away wet. And if she wines, give her a smack, or two.
Cheers.

I've had that clunking sound in the rear after I had spirited driving as well. Something in the brakes but it literally went away within a quarter of a mile. The car is always up to par the next day though so maybe there is something wrong??

The e9x didnt let you down... The e46 is a great car but not up to par with the e9x(stock to stock of course) what you need to do is drive it hard again... She loves it and begs to be driven... What you described is probably normal but never occured to you because you never drove hard before

Noting can be "reproduced" by the service advisors, so maybe it's just a quirk of this car I'll have to deal with. Would love to let someone local from the forum drive my car to compare it with theirs so I can know if there is something vastly different.

i think the car can handle it...not sure about the interior...everytime i come back from so called spirited driving, something new on the inside rattles or becomes more loose...eventually the whole dam inside will fall apart....and ill be driving a creaking old wooden chair

not sure what you mean. I drove slowly through the neighborhood following a 45 minute tear. Rolled into the garage and put on the parking break. That's it.

I get a clunking/ clanking noise from the rear, I was told its the metal in the exhaust and it will make that noise if I drive it hard, seems to be true and the owners Manual does say that the car will make weird noises and there all perfectly normal lol,, but when I hear noises I don't like.... I just make the radio louder

If spirited you mean: jumped a curb, sideswipe a tree, and took out a couple of illegals re-enacting he border crossing , then sadly, No.
But I hear of members here flogging their M on the track all the time without a problem.

When I went to M Driving School they taught us to always do a cool down at low/moderate speed with minimal brake use after hard driving.

Georgeair Touched on it above- after hard driving/ braking when disc brakes cool at a stop, the section behind the pad will cool at a different rate than the rest of the rotor. If this happens too rapidly it can lead to warping. Best to allow things to cool evenly as you drive around. E-brake pad may have left a little "footprint" on the hot rotor, will probably wear away with normal use.

Yes, I don't think you gave enough time to the brakes to cool down and you put the parking break on as has been said above.

Turn the radio up and maybe duct tape... Fixes everything!

Granted I'm still waiting for my ED build date (so I don't have the car), but after numerous test drives, one of the main reasons that attracted me to this car over others is that it's mechanically noisy, in a raw way (much like my S2000, but obviously much more refined), yet has a good degree of civility to it for daily use. I guess I like the noises it makes, but then again, unlike you guys, I haven't lived with it for a while.

I've driven 150 miles to the track, drove 2 hard hours on the track (I'm talking 6 mpg or less, till the brake pedal went soft) and then 150 miles back, all in one day, and the car was perfectly fine the next day. These noises are either normal or things your imagination is coming up with to deal with the guilt of a long night out with her. If the sounds ARE unusual, I highly highly doubt it's related to your driving style. So relax! |
