Why 6mt? you say.....
I drove a DCT M3 today, and yes i know it has dual CLUTCH, and yes its faster per say. And if things continue as they are going stick shift will go the way of record players. BUT ultimately the DCT is a computer controlling the clutch for you..AUTOMATICLY. you cant put the car in the wrong gear, you cant really make mistakes and skip gears (ex..going from 5 -3) YOU WILL Never get that crindge when you hear the metal scape together because you did not rev match or you accidentally put the car in reverse as you were going forward . AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST. Fear will not torment you as you had to stop at a red light on a steep hill in the rain or snow...AND some car is right on your tail. To me, thats what is makes driving 6mt cars different. A little innocent sense of accomplishment as you disengage the CLUTCH pedal give a little gas a smoothly roll up that hill.. all the while looking at your significant other from your peripheral vison, seeing their little smile.. Thats why as long as i have the CHOICE between clutch pedal or not its 6MT all the way. But choices a becoming VERY LIMITED...Sorry for the rant....and i have no problem with people driving DCT or fully automatic vehicles, its just a preference

FYI - E9X M3 6MT has hill control. It will hold it for you on the hill for about 2 or 3 seconds. Not sure why it doesn't always kick in, but it's sure to be there for you on the steepest of hills.

I love 6MT - had it on all my previous cars. but the DCT is such an engineering marvel I couldn't pass it up, and I wouldn't trade it for a 6MT.
sounds like you enjoy 6MT for different reasons than I did though. |

Good post. I'm the same. I enjoy it for my own reasons (Mainly to fool about)...You're at the mercy of the computer in DCT... With a manual if I want to give it a few tasty revs in neutral, or dial up the revs and launch it without carrying a series of steps similar to that of the presidents launch sequence then i can.

i totally understand but I am not there yet. I can completely understand having DCT for the track, but my limited track use has not justified the DCT for me. BUT IT IS FUN

It's great that some people prefer and enjoy 'rowing their own paddle,' but objectively, (& IMHO) E9x M3's 6MT is not exactly an outstanding piece of machinery. It's pretty good, but not But, w/ M-DCT, now you have a tranny that's on par with the great S65 engine and chassis/steering.

DCT is not for track. It has certain adventages at track, true, but "if you don't track, you don't need dct" argument doesn't make sense. In that sense, if you don't track, you shouldn't even get an M3 anyways..

god damn it . after all this DCT talk, im kind of liking the idea a whole lot. Pros such as 2/10ths of a second faster and dropping the risk of mis-shifting make me want it so bad. jeez, Ill be happy with 6mt, whatever.
And fact is you are more involved no matter what anybody says with a manual tranny. YOU are shifting the car not a computer. Im not saying DCT is bad in any way, but it does subtract from the driver involvement. |

what i intended to say is, My above examples are unquie to manual trans driving. And although not particularly fun at the time, they in a way make a otherwise routinely boring experience or drive work drive...into little challenges, personal victories and failures. Part of achievements is the chance you may fail...An extreme example is if they limited your car to Only go the posted speed limit and took over the actual driving for u, That would reduce accidents, less insurance, and you would get to work faster, few here would still buy a M car for that... ofcourse that is an extreme example
