Required tires for lease turn in

Hi . A question for the lease experts: When you return your lease, is there an specific brand or brands of tires that they require you to turn the vehicle in with? The threads on my OE PS2's are below the minimum spec to turn them in like that and I need to buy a set.

I was under the impression that they had to be the exact same tire that the car came with. I wouldn't know for sure since my M Coupe I leased still had the minimum amount of tread at lease end.

better to be the same exact ones. After an initial appraisal on my 335, they said I simply needed factory wheels. Long story short, they lied and I needed the exact staggered set which I did not get. They claimed that each wheel has specific speed ratings.. and a set-up from a 328 won't work on a 335 so this will cost them upwards of 1K to get. (Don't get me started.)

I would have to imagine the lease return works in a similar fashion.. but get it as close to factory stock as possible to avoid potentially large headaches with the stealership.

I have turned in cars with aftermarket tires with no issues. As with anything, may also depend on who you are dealing with and if you are re-leasing another car. Worse case, do not buy new PS2's but get Contis which are cheaper and are also standard on these cars.

I know if the car has runflats you have to replace with runflats. Since that's not the case with you I think they just need to have the same speed rating or at least tires good to 155 where the car's limiter is. All speculation though.

I would look carefully at the tread depth. The charge for each "failed" tire is $200 per the most recent BMW lease turn-in inspection guide (available online). It is likely less expensive for you to turn them in and get charged $200/tire than to buy a brand new set - and they all may not fail. When I turned in my '09 M3 recently, the front tires were ok but the back tires were below spec of 1/8" tread depth minimum. The dealer where I turned in the car was also the dealer where I bought my new one ('11 M3). They ended up not charging me anything in addition to giving me a great deal on the new car. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know the minimum spec was 1/8". I think I might get away with the front ones then. I guess I'll wait until they do the inspection first and then based on that replace what's needed. I'll definitely be looking for some tires in the forum though.
