Why BMW doesn't put another USB/iPod connector in the glove compartment?

I wish BMW would think a little bit harder and understand our needs regarding connectivity and usb devices. I am an Apple user and I have been using Apple products since the Apple IIc back in 1986. I have an iPod 160gig for my music and the iPhone 4 for communications.
How do you suppose to use both devices with only one USB/iPod adapter or Media cradle. First, there is no enough space in the center console if you use the Media Cradle. Second, if I use the iPhone with BMW Apps you cannot use your iPod in the center console. When using the iPod you don't need to have it available to see any information like the iPhone. Why not put a second iPod/USB connector in the glove compartment so both devices could be connected at the same time.

Huh? I have a 160gb iPod and an iPhone 4 as well, I can use they both no probs. Phone goes in the media cradle, iPod is plugged into the USB connector and sits in that little well in front of the USB/aux jacks. I must be missing something or perhaps the E92 is different than the E90?

It's not practical having to have both devices one on top of the other and not being able to access the iPhone right away. What if you don't have the cradle, can you connect both devices at the same time?

There are actually two USB ports for playing devices: primary (the center console USB port) and the secondary (the cradle, only when 6NF or 6NR is installed from factory). You need cradle to access the secondary port.

Get the cradle and the iPod OEM pouch (installed right under the armrest like MY2008) and then you will not have the iPod on top of the iPhone in the cradle. Search for the P/N of the pouch, I posted it some time ago.

I got a question. Why is it when I use my USB port in my 2011, it disables the BT connection? I dont want it to kill my BT connection.

Example. Im playing Slacker radio via BT. My phone is in the cradle (no media cradle, I dont have bmw apps) charging. Wife wants to charge her iphone, using the iphone cable to my USB port for charging. If she does that, BT disables. Why!!!

At least someone with a intelligent idea, but still you are obligated to get the cradle. I don't like wasting my money and I don't like paying $226 for something that can be obsolete in a month when the iPhone 5 comes out in October. I don't really need the plug-in features in 6NR but I do like to listening to Radio Gong 96.3 from Munich thru Tunin Radio App. I wonder if there is a USB/iPod adapter with a 30pin splitter available. That way I could use both devices without having to utilize the stupid cradle.

Well, no cradle means no secondary port.

You could try a USB hub in the primary port, however that OEM port is low power so two iPod devices plugged in will choke the sucker: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=562320

I did try once a different hub with an iPhone and an iPod and it did not work.

The freedom to talk/text on your phone and kill either yourself or a pedestrian? Congrats. Keep your freedom.

You can also play music through the Bluetooth on your. iPhone, also, the car does have 2 USB ports, one in the armrest and another in the glove box. I never even have to plug my iPhone in to listen to music

I don't use my iPhone for music, just for Internet radio and listening to TV thru my sling box. The USB in the glove compartment doesn't support audio and Bluetooth doesn't support apps like Tunin Radio.

If the USB hub option is not usable my only option is to use the aux mini phono jack to plug my iPod and use it manually and the USB for my iPhone apps.

This. The solution is out there and available, if the OP chooses not to take advantage of the cradle option then not sure why BMW is at fault? No pleasing some people I guess.

This is a great idea, thanks Technic. If you do come across the P/N for the iPod pouch please let us know, I had it in my 2008 and thought it was fairly useful.

It's no secret laws such as this and helmet laws are required to stop clueless people from hurting or killing themselves or someone else. If you use your phone while driving, I guess you fall into the clueless category.

I not only use my phone while driving but also check my stocks while driving, read my text messages while driving, listen and watch my TV while driving and I will be doing the same until some stupid politician tells me different in my state. It's call having common sense. If you talk about distractions they should ban navigation systems, satellite radio and the iDrive. Dialing a number thru your iDrive is no different than dialing thru your phone and carrying a conversation in your hands free is less distracting than having your phone in your hand? Those laws don't make any sense as well as thousand of stupid laws in America.
This used to be the land of the free. Not anymore!!!
