Engine sounds strained on occasion lately...

greeting fellow members. I hope everyone has been well. long time since I posted but have run into some weird sounds lately.

Twice in the past few weeks, my car has sounded different after driving it for a while. The engine sounds strained and it's a distinct sound from normal. I know it's the engine because as you rev it, the sound increases. it almost sounds belt related, but i'm no mechanic. Can you guys give me your thoughts on what this sound is from? I have close to 28,000 miles now. Dec 07 build. No lights on in dash, and car operates fine next day. RPI GT exhaust is my only mod.

here's a crappy video that hopefully captured the sound. Listen closely to 43-46 seconds and 1:18-1:26 span. if anyone would be able to tell, it's someone that hears an S65 everyday. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks in advance!

From my armchair mechanic skill plus a really crappy video it sounds almost like a whine that changes with engine speed so maybe as simple as a serpentine belt/tensioner out of wack? Unless you actually "feel" the engine strained v. just "hearing" it because a belt would not likely cause you to feel anything.

I was thinking along those lines. But then why would the car sound normal the next day? can belts go in and out of wack based on heat? Without being able to recreate it consistently, i might be out of luck trying to present this to a dealer.

Not a good vid, but sounds like an accessory to me, and my guess would be the power steering pump. Whatever it is, it's going to get progressively worse, so at least wait until noise is there all the time. Without being able to duplicate a problem, you'd be wasting your time at any dealer. Good luck.

I know the sound well, because I recently had it. Your power steering fluid is low. See:
