annoying error message
Anyone get the following error msg on I Drive screen : transmission Position P not engaged". At the same time in the small driver screen an image appears of a car with left/right pointing arrows.
It happens a lot when you are backing the car out and most of the time when you select a forward gear. Its so stupid, of course Position P is not selected, I select Reverse to back out and D to go forward. Car is not disabled in any way but think its a sensor somewhere that could eventaully cause problems. Anyone have experienced this and what was the fix?? Thanks. chuck 2009 M3 44,000 miles |

This usually only happens when you get out of the car and don't shut it off. Never had it happen when I was actually still in the car....

It is a warning to let you know the car is in neutral and can roll if the brakes are not applied. With DCT it is not possible to have a "park" feature with the engine running like there is on a standard autobox. For me, I only get the warning if the engine is running and I open the door. |

Comes on when the car is in neutral with the engine running. It's warning you that the car can roll away. Just like any manual transmission in neutral, there is nothing holding the car in place. If you are going to get out or want to park with your foot off the brake, you need to set the hand-brake or it will roll - that's what it's telling you.
The car does not have "park" like an automatic that can be engaged while the engine is running. The car puts itself in a park "mode" after the engine is turned off. I still set the hand-brake before exiting the car like I would any manual. Especially on a hill. That's just me. I'm used to driving manuals and since that's what a DCT is (a MANUAL transmission without a clutch pedal) I drive it like one. Think of it as a manual with an optional automatic shifting mode, rather than an automatic where you can just over-ride the shift points.
