Basic Nav Software Updating Question....
Hey, newbie question... Get over it... Can I / how do I update the software on my iDrive? Is it possible? Where would I go to get that done. I drive an '08 and it would be sweet to have the new software and new navigation... Damn this shit is getting outdated

The only thing you are able to upgrade on your navigation is the updated navigation DVD. it is 199.99 from the dealer and all you do is take out yours and pop the new one in. From 2009 and up, they are now using a totally new system and not a DVD at all. A built in system. Upgrading that cost around 5-600 dollars. It is upgraded through a USB port which I believe is in the glove compartment. You are not going to go that route unless you either upgrade your car to a new one, or convert every component of the iDrive out of a new one into yours which would be pointless. Just buy the new DVD, and call it a day.

...Soooo where would I find this DVD besides the dealer? I have a feeling I could find it cheaper. Would any BMW navigation DVD from 2009+ work on my car? |

No, 08's use a different DVD than 09's.
If you want an 11 East Coast DVD, you can have it for shipping.

There are two components to consider when talking about Navi updates:
1) The actual map data. Since your car is 2008, I'm assuming it's a CCC headunit (I.e. it uses DVD's loaded inside to access the map data). Thus, you'll need the actual new disks as everyone has mentioned. That would bring your map data up to the latest. 2) The software of the head unit. This is the basically the brain of the system that USES the Map Data to make routing decisions for you. This can only be updated by a dealer in their service shop via a programming station. Before you go and pay the retailer to do this, you should first check with them if there is even newer software available for your head unit. Often times when a control unit in the car is no longer being manufactured, software levels are frozen and don't change anymore as time goes on. Hope that helps. Cheers, K |
