Extra Mileage after an Oil Change from the Dealership
I had my car serviced yesterday for my annual oil change and the car was returned to me with an extra 8 miles on the odometer. In addition, my service invoice has both "mileage in" and "mileage out" as 7,244, but the odometer has the mileage as 7,252. Is there any reason that there should be an extra 8 miles put on the car from a simple oil change or am I to assume that someone at the dealership went for a joyride in my car?
Thanks in advanced. |

Sorry to say but yes, the car was taken for a ride. No reason for the car to leave the dealership for an oil change.

I've heard some say they have to drive it to get the oil temp up to check the level.

IMO 8 miles is a little much and they could just let the car idle for 10-15 mins to get a good reading. Its what my dealership does.

Doesn't the manual specifically say not to start up the car and just let it idle?
IMHO, 8 miles is probably not worth stressing about (unless you have reason to believe the car was thrashed during those miles). Regardless, now you know this bothers you. If next time you explicitly tell the dealer you don't want them taking the car for a spin after an oil chance, I'm sure they wont. And if they do, regardless of whether it's excessive or not, they'll be in the wrong for having gone against your request. Now, go enjoy the summer and drive your car!

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I called my service advisor earlier today and he didn't have an answer as to why there was an extra 8 miles on the odometer. He did say that he'd talk to the tech that serviced my car and let me know what the reasoning is when I stop by tomorrow. 8 miles just seemed a little excessive to me. I take extra precautions to take good care of my car and I'd rather not have it driven by anyone without my consent. Also, I don't know in what manner the car was driven.

Many dealership's have there Technicians perform a road test before returning the vehicle to the customer, which is unnecessary for something as basic as an oil change. I recommend you tell your Service Advisor to put a line on the Repair Order stating
"Customer does not authorize ANY test drive" for any future service. |

^Yea some techs are better than others with respect to how they treat customer cars
I had a tech return my car once (my 335i) and immediately I could smell fried clutch..I gave him a few choice words then had a nice heart to heart with the manager and banked a decent voucher for furture parts/services. |

I wouldn't stress if there was an extra 10 miles on it. I just had my X5 serviced and it came back with 335 extra miles due to the dealer driving 3 hours to pick up the car and take it down to the dealer. 6 hour round trip for free. But for a simple oil change less than 10 miles is acceptable.

Its called a road test, 8 miles is nothing. Build a bridge, move on with life.

Reading this stuff annoys me, but at the time I really just wanted to take the car and beat traffic lol. Didn't make too much of a big deal as I was close to 50K miles and was visiting the dealer a good amount to get things serviced and replaced. After that incident though, they left notes on the car so it never left the garage area....was a little embarrassed to be honest. |

This has been a common complain in the forum over the years. I don't understand how some people seem to be lenient about this and even volunteer ridiculous excuses for garages guilty of this. Take it for what it is, petty infringement of an owner's right. It does not have be tolerated. People who turn their heads the other way are facilitators making it easier for these places to repeat with another of our cars. Think of the next guy, and don't just close your eyes because you don't have the guts to say anything !
In the meantime I would definitively put a legal note that forbids the car to be driven on the road when taking it for oil change. |

Im suspicious, i dropped my car off at the BMW dealer on Tuesday for some simple stuff, they said it should be done Thursday and they didnt even call me once, not Friday or Saturday (im pissed at this poor service) I wrote down my mileage, they put it of the in receipt, and when and if they ever call me there better F N not be many extra miles on my car or theres going to be Hell up in that dealership.
I just have a feeling there some ass hole driving my car all weekend.
