Another Tranny Replaced Under (extended) Warranty!

I was one of the few that had a bearing issue, blew a motor & had a crate motor installed under warranty at 28k miles.

Fast forward to last month, and my 2008 started making an odd noise in the 1-2 and 2-3 shift (not grinding, but a fast rattling). It was also making a knocking sound in reverse.

Just went out of warranty in September but dropped $3200 for the Powertrain Plus Warranty. The BEST BUY ever!

6 weeks after buying the warranty, and they are replacing my tranny in the next few days for just a $50 deductible. I was given the option to replace my clutch (50% wear now), for just the cost of parts, since it's all apart now, and I gave them the green light.

New motor, new tranny....not a bad way to end the year!

Sounds like you made a smart purchase!

Any idea how much it would have cost you if it wasn't covered? I have another 6 months on warranty left and definitely thinking about getting the extended warranty. I majority of the time warranty can be a waste of money (otherwise it wouldn't be profitable for them to offer it) but I think the piece of mind can sometimes be worth it.

That link should take you back to the quick slideshow I posted of the engine transplant. I was allowed back into the service area to see that they put a crate motor, not a rebuilt unit in. The metal piece is 1 of 2 chunks that came from the old motor!

I really thought about the extended warranty for a while, figuring, "how bad can my luck really be? (regarding the tranny failing also)".

I don't know what a remanufactured or new tranny would cost, but the clutch isn't cheap (about $3500 with the flywheel and some other bs they mentioned that should be replaced), so possibly north of 10k (but I don't know).

I lucked out - the extended warranty can be cancelled with a full refund within 60 days. If they denied my coverage for any reason (blamed it on my driving or abuse), I was going to cancel the coverage and apply the $3200 to the repair bill.

Labor alone has got to be more than 3200. I'm sure you came out ahead on this.

About $1700 dealer cost for clutch/flywheel.

I am glad that the engine was absolutely zero out-of-pocket to me. The tranny, was $50, but of course, they nailed me on the clutch. I am trying to see that the car will HOPEFULLY now go major-trouble-free for a long time, but there's always a surprise around the next corner.

I have owned several cars over the years, ranging from a POS Hyundai out of college to another POS Pontiac to a few modded turbo-Volvos that I still own. I have had my share of car problems, but apart from the Hyundai and the M3! I have never blown a tranny, let alone an engine!

Sure, my Volvos are "not an M", but the white one pictured here has 186k, the red has 146k and the brown one is 30 yrs old with about 80k (garaged for years) - ALL WITH THE ORIGINAL DRIVE TRAIN and mods! I towed a 17' ski boat for 4 summers with the white one, and I still couldn't kill it!

Yeah those costs are a FRACTION of the actual price you can purchase parts for. Not sure where this data is pulled from, but its far from bmwparts.com prices and they are always the cheapest place in town.

Maybe I'm having a blonde moment, but did you mention what tranny you have?

That site isn't 100% accurate, and its dealer cost so you're going to pay much more usually.
