Air conditioning compressor disengaging momentarily is a common feature on low powered cars when the driver accelerates hard. It has been around for many years. Older compressors were not efficient and produced a considerable amount of drag on the motor. Newer ones are much more efficient but the feature has been carried forward

Most cars will disengage the A/C at WOT. And the M3 alternator only engages when the car isn't accelerating (definitely when it's coasting, there appears to be debate on whether it's on at steady speed).
Cheers

According to the M school, the A/C/compressor disengages at 80% of WOT. Instructors said it was okay to drive with A/C on at WOT. After a few laps you could totally tell the A/C was not working. Unlike most tracks, BMW M School requires windows up so you can hear the radios.

I am not sure it fully disengages all the time.
While driving on the track I usually turn it off. However, on two occasions, I forgot to turn the A/C off, the car overheated and went into limp mode. After turning the A/C off and doing a cool down lap, everything went back to normal. This never happened with the A/C off. My guess is that the priority is to maintain the cabin temperature. So if the compressor does disengage, I think it would only do so for quick WOT acceleration bursts. However with prolonged WOT, as with driving on a track, the compressor would re-engage to maintain cabin cooling. Just guessing here... Last edited by CanAutM3; 05-30-2013 at 08:05 PM.. |

Yep. "A/C Off" (aka "Turbo On")

Never knew about the alternator auto disengaging on WOT. Learn something new everyday. I never have my AC on during aggressive driving so I never had to think about it.

Would be a cool feature to have the ability to program the A/C setting (on/off) in the M-button settings .

If it's not 60 degrees in my car, I'm not happy. AC is the bees knees.

Whenever I am going to drive fast, I turn off the AC. Regardless if the AC is on at WOT (or 80% of WOT), the car drives much more sluggish in general with the AC on. I seem to notice this on most cars.
