Car hack highlights march toward remote control of critical systems

I am in the info security field and this stuff definitely scares me. Most systems are not built with security in mind and hackers will always find a way to exploit them. Enjoy.

Me too, however unless people leave their BT OBDII's plugged in while driving, we should be safe from remote exploits for a good long while. That Progressive "snapshot" device, if deployed more ubiquitously, could produce such a threat, however, if its wireless system could be compromised.

To call this "hacking" (or black-hat hacking) may be a bit of a stretch though, all the guys really managed to pull off is the malicious-equivalent of what Mike Benvo has been making a tidy living off of helping upgrade members on here

"Just because no one has been able to commandeer a vehicle by wirelessly hacking into its internal computers does not mean it won't happen eventually."

That about sums up the worth of the article.

The question is not whether a car can be wirelessly remote control. The question is when will it happen. Let's just say sooner than most of us would like to know or want to worry about.

I'm a big fan of Home Theater automation. And with one touch of my IPAD button I can control my home light, HVAC, projector, amps, dvd, sat, etc. And if I wanted to, I could also set my home security system, lock my front door, activate the camera in my garage. Heck I can turn on and off my house lights, house alarm with my cell phone. The point is, we already have the technology to also control a vehicle too via satellites like On Star (GM). All that's needed is the interface to control steering, throttle, brakes, turns, etc.

Think of the I-Robot movie with the Will Smith's Audi automatically driving at 125 MPH.

They say that although this is technically possible, the likelihood of being able to do it remotely is almost nil at this time. Mostly based on the fact that the car is not able to receive the types of signals needed to have outside control over the car.

The ECU in all cars just need to be standalone and only accessible via OBDII. Kill the stupid Bluetooth TPMS and/or any other devices in use or planned to send data wirelessly to the ECU. Social media, music, etc needs to run on a separate system so if it is compromised, it isn't going to kill you.

The ability to issues commands remotely to your car already exists thanks to BMW Assist.

BMW Assist operates via cell signal and is integrated into the ECU. That's all it takes my friend.

If you've seen the new Fast and Furious movie you know you gotta drive the old school American cars with no computers in order to counter the high tech villains!

Did you happen to see the article from Black Hat, where some hackers have been able to take over TVs and home automation systems?

Cheers
