Visiting DC this weekend from Chicago...what's been affected by the shutdown?
Hey guys,
Heading to DC for a wedding this weekend, i've been there before but my wife hasn't. We wanted to do the touristy things and visit the monuments (e.g. Lincoln Memorial) and such. Can you guys give me any intel as to whether any of the attractions have been affected by the shutdown? Any suggestions for out-of-towners? Food? Attractions? Must-sees? We're open to anything. Thanks! |

Everything government operated is a no-go. Monuments, public museums, parks, etc... forget about it.
No Army-Navy game. Hell, Obama can't even go slack off and play golf. |

Yea pretty much all museums, monuments, etc, per the above. However, there are still people moving barricades and entering some of these facilities. Haven't heard of any arrests yet. Army - Navy game is still on.

Hopefully the wedding isn't at one of the monuments b/c a few people already had their's cancelled.
Like Jaime said, give us an idea of where you're staying and we can narrow the suggestions.

The wedding itself and our hotel is in Alexandria. We're renting a car to get around. We don't mind driving around at all.
I know right? LOL, Chicago has a gun ban, so unfortunately, only the bad guys have guns. There are really just certain pockets of the city that should be avoided. |

If you are staying in Alexandria, try to check out Old Towne. Great place and some really good restaurants. There's also the National Harbor right over the Wilson Bridge that is fairly new and has some good sites and shops for the little lady to shop in.

I've been in the dc area for seven years and if every thing was open I would still go see Gettysburg. Such an amazing place and you can drive around the entire battlefield. Soldiers from each platoon came back and put up markers about what happened at thousands of various locations. It's very moving and real history unlike the museums in dc.
Would take you little over two hours from dc to get there but it's well worth it. |

I'll throw a few more food options:
Alexandria: Restaurant Eve (go for weekday lunch) - seriously, if you're local and haven't had this yet, you're missing out. Arlington: Pete's New Haven Pizza Pho 75 |
