Plz help..Transmission Failure...

Hi guys..I have a E93 DCT with 50300 miles on it..for the first time, I got this transmission failure message and couldn't get into gears..after several try and 10 mins wait, the message cleared and I can drive the car..

After some research, I found that some members with the exact same problems end up replacing the transmission.

You probably notice that my car is out of warranty. At this moment, I think I want to trade the car in before the transmission blows up..

Plz help guys, any input is appreciated..thanks

Just go to a dealer to figure out what the issue is. If you sell the car with a known issue and try to hide it, its fraud. Which can end up costing you a lot more.

Same thing happened to me TWICE, when car was brand new. 200 miles and 700 miles. Third time for me is the charm and I get lemons regardless of warranty (according to my attorney).

Car has 21k now and has been acting up lagging up shifts lately. Happened once, no codes. Waiting for one to throw so I can get out of it

Had the same transmission warning on my 04 e46 m3 (SMG). My service advisor said I needed a new tranny. Had them clear/reset the code. Warning did not come back. Ended up selling it (approx 90K) and the new owner has not had any issues. I did get concerned and thus sold it once the tranny warning fired.

It's your car's way of telling you that you should have gotten the manual gearbox instead.

If you do need a new transmission you can get a used one off ebay for 4-5k. No need to get a brand new one.

Sorry to hear OP. I hope it is just a computer glitch or something the dealer can fix without costing a lot.
But I wonder how easily repairable the DCT is even for BMW service. The overall complexity and the invasion of automation and "learning" behavior into its operation probably make diagnosis very difficult. Simplicity is a virtue. With an automatic there seem to be unknowns while driving it and more unknowns to diagnose it.
There is nothing like being in the know with a full MT control. This is one area where MT shines. Easy to diagnose, cheaper to fix.

Dealers should do a full inspection before they take it in. They did on both of my other M cars and would have found the issue if it was throwing an error.

So there would be no fraud.

If his transmission has an issue that he somehow hides and gets away with, then yes it is fraud.

I'm not saying he would, but people sell cars with known issues all the time.

Not every dealer is going to check every single detail. Most of the time they look for check engine lights and take it for a spin around the block. If not CEL is on and it drives, its purchased.

You can sell a car to Carmax in 45 minutes and all they do is take it around the block. I know, I've sold them two cars now.

How would you feel if you bought a car with a known issue that the seller played coy about?

I'm just saying, be honest. That's all.

Besides, it's probably just some random bunk code. My 11 DCT threw them all the time.

I hope its a random error as well. There were some hints about the transmission problems. When cold start the car and put it into gears, there is always a clunking sound. Had dealer check it and they said it was fine. Also there was a minor oil leak at the gasket pan. My mechanic found it (After warranty expired of course) and said it was minor and it can be fixed along with next oil change.

Well I should know by Monday. Thanks for all the advise though.

That is the operative phrase. I am sure he has had other codes thrown as all E9x owners and dealer can attest to. Ifit clears and he has no other problems with it there was no attempt to hide anything. I can't remember all the codes my car has thrown through the years and clears up upon restart or reflash and upgrade of software.

I don't think you are obligated to recount every aspects of your vehicle. But then again IANAL.

Sounds like a software issue

my '09 did the same thing when it had a few thousand miles on it...was told it was a communication error with the DME...had it reflashed and never had another issue..although the car was low milage (26000)....

I would think if there was something wrong with my DTC the track would have exposed it...

Agreed. I can see that. I dont sell or have ever done business with Carmax.

When I got rid of my Hondas and BMWs the dealers ran CEL checks and looked at all my maintenance to give me an honest offer.

You are right if it is known but hopefully at least 50% of dealers will catch it..

Update: the mechanic just called me and said the code showed a power supply problem and he checked all the electrical system, which turned out fine. He is going to check the hydraulic system tmr.

I hope it is just a software glitch. Thanks for the advise guys.
