Can I lower the clutch on my 128i?

I want to know if I can lower the clutch on my 128i. I am 6'3", and it would be much better for me if the friction point was a couple inches lower - flush with the brake pedal would be ideal. I did this on my 98 prelude years ago, and it made a great difference. I already have my seat all the way back, and I could use the extra space if possible!

thanks

Hp autoworks has an aftermarket clutch pedal but it's pretty costly.

Maybe your clutch is worn out ? When its new the engagement point will be lower than with lots of miles/and wear, it will be higher up the pedal travel point.

Have you been in another (new-er) manual 128i ?

Well, mine has only 30K miles. I got it with 22K and the engagement is tight as can be (and the same as when I bought it). Almost no freeplay, to where I literally only need to tense my foot to disengage... I have not driven another/new 128 but from my experience, honestly I've never felt a tighter friction point.

When you say the engagement point will be higher up - do you also mean it will be larger? Obviously, I'm not looking to expand this friction point - only "re-locate" it.

FYI - this is what I did with my old car. I've heard that it may not be possible on the Bimmer, but wanted to find out for sure.

Interesting, thanks. But... how does that change where the engagement point is?

Thank you. Yes, the main thing I'm looking for is a "Lower pedal resting location". I'm hoping that I don't have to drop $300 just for that....

No. When you depress the clutch pedal, the point at which the clutch starts to "grab" and the point the clutch is "released" will be the same. Say 1/2 inch on pedal travel, movement of the pedal.

BUT when the clutch is new... this point that the clutch starts to engage will be towards the bottom of the pedal travel. Typically just off the floor/carpet. As years and miles go by... (sometimes a 1/4 mile at a time!) the clutch's engagement point will become higher and higher up the pedal. First in the middle of the clutch pedal stroke and then finally towards the top of the pedal stroke. Thats when you know your clutch is on its last legs. That and maybe clutch "chatter" vibrations as you let the clutch out(engagement).

I think its possible to adjust the clutch pedal linkage like you did on your Prelude. The preload of the clutch pedal to the master cylinder is what you are adjusting. Like that one poster mentioned.... if adjusted too "tight" (much, no free play) you could burn up your clutch. It would be like resting your foot on the clutch pedal. Thats a No, No.
