There is a youtube video showing adult seating on it, but in 2nd row seat folded away.
They never fold back the seat. I assumed and it looked like he wasn't going to to fit LOL. |

I heard BMW tried to film this but in every shot the models suffocated before the camera person could even adjust the focus and lighting properly so they had to give up.

Here is a vid, english subtitles available.
I took the 3rd seatrow, because it actually increases the loading capacity in the boot, because i believe you Can move the 2nd seatrow forwards. OK, You lose the space below the deck, but i Never use that anyway. |

considering the amount you pay for this option...I wonder if this is ever a good deal...cramped and dead...I would never want to put my child back there... The 7 seaters that are out there (Mercedes or Infiniti), are actually 10 to 15 inches longer in body length giving you that space which makes it a 7 seater... Not this guy... my 2 cents... |

There is as much room behind the 3rd row seats as there is with most 7 seaters, and a lot of smaller hatchbacks have similar distance behind, so I don't think putting children there is necessarily foolhardy or negligent. Hopefully the 2 stage brake lights will help prevent rear impacts.........
My recollection of the GL I tested was that most of the extra length was used in front of the 2nd and 3rd row seats, and also that the complicated controls would lead to an increased likelihood of frontal impact |

The 3rd row is fine for children up to 5 foot ish (10-12 years old).
I know this because I sat my children in them, not just watched a video with an adult squished in. They had loads of room, and loved them. Rear end impact is a valid concern, no different to our bigger LR Discovery, but still a concern. |

i had the gl550 and hated the way it drove. rather save my money and get sienna minivan ( which isnt cheap either 45k loaded awd). I like the handling on bmws. I need the 3rd occasionally as I have 10,5 and newborn....i am thinking about q7 i think its slighty bigger but dont know how it drives. i play around with the mmi and dont really like it.

If you get the "Comfort Rear Seats" you can move them forward and back (I suspect they're the ones you get with the 3rd row pack) and you don't lose the underfloor storage ;p

Mine does not have the "Comfort Rear Seats" and it DOES move forward and back, and it tilts to towards the front when you let ppl in the 3rd row

The tiny 3rd row is the only reason why I did not buy the previous and most likely current X5, (I really wanted to but I have 4 children and I need the seating) but instead bought the last two generation Acura MDXs. IMO, the only substitute for an X5 is the MDX:
