In the hills / twisties: DSC on / MDM / or Off?
Just got to work from another wonderful commute through the hills, and I was wondering if I should go balls out with DSC off. I suppose the answer to that is that it depends, but it seems to me that I won't fully understand how to drive RWD if I have the nanny on all the time.
On the other hand I don't want to spin off a cliff or into a tree. What do you guys think? |

If you set me as your life insurance recipient, then yes. Do it. Now.
On a serious note, I wouldn't unless you have taken driving school and regularly track without dsc. It is easy to get to the limit of the car'a performance. Question is, will you know how to properly react when you get there?

DSC off is a bad idea on normal streets even if you're an experienced driver. MDM is fine. I've taken DSC off a couple times and though I feel I can manage it, I don't want to skirt on that line of being at the limit with no guardrail to save me.

+1 on this one. Seriously, there is no way that you could stretch this car anywhere near to its limitations in a street legal situation. That much became clear to me after a track weekend. MDM allows you to have a bit more fun, basically kicking the rear out a little, or spinning the wheels at take off. But both these activities count as harmless boy racer diversions and have little to with the limits of this street-legal race car!

However, the LSD in the M3 presents a new variable and dynamic of driving when you go into oversteer. The diff really pushes you hard out of a corner when you are in a slide and if you give it too much throttle input, or lift off mid slide, you may not know how to recover it. Other than drifting in first gear on an empty multi-lane road where you can't run into objects or run off cliffs (and risking a ticket or whatever a jerk cop would give you) I would save it for the auto x |

Haha I've seen that video.
The only time I've done some controlled oversteer is the occasional u-turn with no one looking. I must say I am loving the E90. It's a great car. |

You included the answer in your post "I don't want to spin off a cliff or into a tree". If you're looking for us to talk you into something, you shouldn't make it so easy to be mothering. Drive at your level, not at your limit. |

I already know the answer, but it was a thought that flashed through my mind while I was up there. If I were to drive with DSC off I'd be very careful I'm sure, but I don't think it's really worth it. |

I really don't understand those who feel the need to take DSC completely off on the street. I can't think of a worse environment to test the car's and more importantly your limits as a driver than on the street...
If you want to learn how to drive the car with DSC off, do autocross or a skid pad event. Going "balls out" on the street makes you sound like a complete moron. |

I'm thinking of wrapping my car but I really like the oem color. Not sure if something different would be fun or if I would miss my paint. What do you guys think I should do? |

Go DSC off. You'll never learn how to control the car at the limits until you try. This is especially true on public roads. No risk no reward.
On a related note, and correct me if I am wrong, the value of my investment, M3, increases with rarity, decline in supply. /note the sarcasm Last edited by InterJon; 01-14-2014 at 05:18 PM.. |

When I drive on track in any car, all nannies off. In most cases they slow the car down or change the way it behaves making it difficult to practice car control skills.
When I drive on street, I drive with them on. You're driving public roads with animals, pedestrians, bikers and other cars - all of whom are unwilling participants in your learning car control. DSC is more for their protection than yours. Tire walls can't die or sue you. Last time I checked, you don't get lap times from a canyon run. Why in the hell would you want to expose yourselves and others to those risks. Drive well below your limits on the street or take it to the track. |

You don't have a driver defense course in your area on a track? In south Florida we have a driver defense course, it's really fun because you get to push your car to the limits. They even wet the course so you can feel your car in different terrain. I personally wouldn't drive with dsc off. Save it for the track man

you can drive mdm as it will still catch you as long as you aren't going too far off base (you can still spin out and fall off a cliff with mdm). I hope OP lives in NORTHERN cali not in socal. Last edited by pkimM3r; 01-14-2014 at 04:55 PM.. |
