DCT Failure

I need your help! My vehicle is an 08 with 50k miles. Recently, reverse and 1st-2nd shifts have been very jerky. I have also noticed a whine coming from the transmission tunnel at low speeds. After driving from a 75 mile trip I was pulling into my driveway and the I-drive noted a failure. The warning went away after a restart but the jerkiness is still there. Has anyone experienced this? I am out of warranty!

Have you done a DCT oil change? Could be clutches but hopefully some one can chime in.

Do you have any leaks? Sounds like it could be low on fluid, get it checked asap before it gets worst.

I have not unless this would be done during routine service at dealership. What does this entail?

Just last week in my '13 DCT with 6,400 miles I experienced a "Transmission Failure" warning on I-Drive, and the car was skipping gears.
I limped home, shut it off, waited a bit, started back up, and drove around with no issues.
The car is still driving fine now, but that did freak me out.
I have no noticeable leaks or strange sounds emitting from the tranny area.

Get it to the dealer. Don't start just arbitrarily trying to fix it yourself by changing fluids, flashing new software, etc. There are diagnostic tools that will read what is specifically happening in the transmission, and diagnostic flowcharts to properly troubleshoot.

The failure that DCT owners fear the most... Good luck, man. Hopefully it isn't anything serious and you've got a good dealer.

Keep us updated.

This from the BMWCCA forum in 2010:

"It is part number 28007842377 which has a BMWNA MSRP of $12,215.70. Tischer BMW on-line site price for it is $9,772.56".

Who would pay for a brand new $10k transmission for a used (2008) car? A used transmission will probably cost $2k.

My DCT went into limp mode the morning AFTER I drove it hard a few months ago. Took it to BMW and they said there was a spike in temperature the day before and the car was turned off before the DCT had cooled off enough. So the next morning it went into limp mode when it was restarted. Hasn't happened since.

Does anyone know of a DCT rebuild kit or shop that does it? The only shop I could find was www.sspperformance.com

Always buy extended warranties. Always. They are insurance policies for this exact reason. Hope it works out

Okay guys, so it turns out that there was a severe loss in transmission fluid as result of a "worn" connection in the reservoir. That was what was explained to me. The malfunction error as noted in the computer reading stated a high temperature in the transmission an thus limited gear selections.

I have no idea how the line could have been worn or even severed. I am very skeptical as I rarely drive my M hard. It stays in non M mode and level 1 shift speeds 98% of the time.

Anyway, the repair takes 12 hours and is going to cost me 2000$ They SA and mechanic mentioned that this would fix the problem. I am worried that the high heat could have damaged one or both of the clutches.

Would a transmission with low fluid behave as badly as it had been when I noticed the problem?

Friction material behaves differently when it overheats, and the metal obviously is expanding at a different rate than other components.
