Adblue guzzler
7000 km on my 3.0d in 6 weeks, and turns out my car is an Adblue guzzler.
It has consumed 9,5 liters of Adblue so far and I already had to go to BMW to have the tank filled up. Technician told me it is not normal. For those with a 3.0d, can you share what your consumption is ? You can see it on the car status screen.... |

For the diesel engines, yes. BMW (and others, too, but not everyone) needed this "trick" to reach Euro 6.
Not only for the F15. For all cars being sold after Euro 6 is needed on new cars. I think in autumn 2014. |

I know its early days for the F15 but is this something along with tyre pressure etc one is going to have to check every month or so. Or is this done at service intervals? I assume there is a warning light that comes up on the dash if its running low. |

It should suffice to fill it up at service intervals. At least the manual claims it does. It's supposed to be enough for 15 - 20.000 kms.
There's a warning light in the dash, too. And it's not rocket science to fill it up: Drive to a major gas station, park at the AdBlue pump, open the hood, screw open the blue AdBlue thingy (no idea what the English word is, sorry), put the pump's AdBlue nozzle in the opening, and wait till it's full, close everything, pay, done. |

The NOx reduction system not only relies on level detectors fitted to the two AdBlue tanks it also uses sensors mounted at various locations in the exhaust system to measure the systems effectiveness. Bearing this in mind it's important to use the correct fluid if you top up 'manually' (not at the dealers)
Say, for example, you top it up with water it's very likely that the emission sensors will detect that the NOx reduction system has a problem and this will eventually prevent the engine from starting. (it gives you adequate warnings that this will happen)

- the adblue you can buy in gas station is for trucks only, and not suited for cars with EUR 6 norm -under the blue cap is a special nozzle with a safety valve, that will only open if you screw in the corresponding BMW bottle of Adblue. So you are forced to use the BMW products...talk about vendor lock-in. Next they will ask us to use only BMW fuel ! Below a picture of the bottle. I now have a spare 2 liter bottle at home. |
