One thing about Piastri, is he just focuses ahead unless someone is alongside him. He doesn't really adjust his line much in defense, which is such a unique way of "defending" that it threw lando off and led to the incident. Had Lando gone right, he would have probably claimed the inside line on the next corner and taken the spot.

Lando tried the inside before to no avail.
Possibly but then PIA would have suddenly started using the mirrors and...jinked right .

It's a rough outcome for everyone involved, especially for the groundhog.

Why did Norris did get a 5 sec penalty, but didn't get any penalty points?

In the stewards report they explained. Iirc is because Oscar was not disadvantaged.

In my mind the stewards are wrong blaming Lando in spite of Lando taking the blame as to avoid a confrontation with the team.
In F1 you are allowed to block once no questions asked. Lando was never alongside Oscar and was 100% behind Oscar's car at all times, that's why he said it was his fault as he had no right to any space because of that.

In fact In F2, Nascar, touring cars etc you are allowed to block as many times as you want. Some F1 drivers block twice (left and right) and risk a penalty. "moving under braking" is the other frowned upon block move.

When I saw it live, I thought the same thing. Re-watching it, I don't know that I see much else to say conclusively that it was Piastri intentionally squeezing. Seemed to me like he just wasn't paying attention to his mirrors. Would be curious to see Piastri's typical line into that corner... did he go any more wide than usual?

However, the reaction by Toto Wolff was uncomfortably stone cold - zero excitement despite his pilot grabbing pole. After a couple of "hah" cheers without reaction from his team, Russell 'summoned' Wolff to react: "Talk to me !". Silence. Russell tried again: "Talk to me !". Only then, Wolff replied with a clinical voice: "Yes [+ something briefly that I couldn't understand because the Belgian journalist talked over it]". Just the bare minimum to congratulate Russell.

Sounds like the atmosphere is tense between Russell and Wolff. Contract extension time and it seems that Wolff keeps Russell in the waiting room.

Post GP, Wolff first congratulated Antonelli with P3, telling how "grande" he had become. Russell's fourth GP win of his career, was no priority for Wolff's congratulations. Poor George.

Then how are cars to overtake, in touring cars if constant blocking a tap here and there to say I'm coming through. Here if you tap you are given a time penalty and points ie MAX at Barcelona was just a tap not a crash as Rosberg described it.

lol, you have to ask them how they overtake. but the block was legal. have you not watched how Max does not get passed by faster Larens, by faster Lewis Hamiltons, etc?

I agree Oscar's move whether it was intentional or not, was very cheeky, but it was legal.

if somehow Lando managed to get his car alongside Oscar, then he is entitled to "a car's width", and has a claim to tarmac. but while he's behind, he has no claim.

Watching Lando fumble the bag makes me appreciate how hard it is to win, even with the fastest car (which isn't as "fast" as some other cars have been)

I don't think Oscar is particularly good, but he's level headed enough and consistent (even if it's slightly slower than maximum pace) to keep himself in the fight. I wonder how the second half of the season will shape up?

In these circumstances the rules are neither here or there, PIA was in the middle of the track then coinciding with lando's manoeuvre went to the left, there was a gap.

I hadn't seen that yet. ''He's not supposed to be doing that'' moving left at that moment, Jaques hit it on the nail and easy for the new to F1 public to ascertain Lando shouldn't have been there (when there was a gap) and Stella is not up to understanding the realities of track combat.
